Together with Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme, Mister Donut remains one of the most admired and revered doughnut chains in the Philippines and in other parts of the planet. This prominent name in coffee and well-doughed pieces of bread with creamy fillings was established in 1955 by Harry Winouker—Bill Rosenberg’s (Dunkin’ Donuts’ founder) brother-in-law, via his first wife, Bertha Greenberg—right at the heart of Boston, Massachusetts. Mister Donut’s advent to the dessert market emerged when both Rosenberg and Winouker engaged in a heated argument that resulted in the severance of ties in terms of running Dunkin’ Donuts’ regular operations. Hence, he founded the Mister Donut empire in Boston and replicated Rosenberg’s model of offering doughnuts and cups of coffee to a variety of customers, including professionals affiliated with companies around the metropolis. This concept paved the way for Mister Donut to stand toe-to-toe with the other two pastry companies in the United States and beyond. This commitment to standing on its own in a competitive bakery landscape contributes to the longevity and customer loyalty it commands today.

Twenty-seven years later, in 1982, Mister Donut made its Philippine market presence possible along the bustling Recto Avenue in Manila. Interestingly, this penetration occurred just a year after Dunkin’ Donuts and McDonald’s commenced their operations in Makati City and Manila, respectively. In a way, Mister Donut ambitioned to position itself as an effective competitor to Dunkin’ Donuts by serving coffee, hot chocolate, and frappuccino cups to Filipino customers across various areas in the archipelago. When 1995 came into fruition, Ramcar (the manufacturer behind Motolite’s elite car battery lines) acquired a major stake in the doughnut company’s operations. This initiative alone allowed Motolite to expand its brand portfolio beyond offering batteries that power the internal components of public and private vehicles in the Philippines. Radios and air-conditioning units are prime examples of machines that Motolite’s batteries and its rivals provide sufficient energy for.

Mister Donut’s prominent regular and chocolate Bavarian-filled doughnuts are shown in the left column of the above photo. Both contain cream fillings that are stuffed within their interiors to provide that satisfying taste and smooth texture in a customer’s mouth. On the one hand, their exteriors are dressed with dashes of sugar for the sweet aspect of the bread pieces themselves to shine. The opposite column features the lengthwise chocolate doughnut, coined the Premium Twist. In particular, this variant is dressed with sugar and outlined by chocolate sauce to give that hint of sweet and tempting taste. Other Premium Twist doughnuts available nationwide are rocky road/chocolate marshmallows, full chocolate nibs, ultimate chocolate, and peanut butter-strawberry. Smidgets and Donuts & Dip are the other product lines that Mister Donut offers to Filipino customers. The former denotes the bite-sized doughnut pieces, which intentionally compete with Dunkin’ Donuts’ Munchkins.

In the Philippine context, Mister Donut sells its doughnuts, beverages, and savory meals nationwide through its standalone stores, in-mall branches, and 7-Eleven trays. Notably, the prominent convenience store brand 7-Eleven has been partnering with Mister Donut. This enduring collaboration makes offering the doughnut chain’s pastry lines possible.
